My days of growing up with the old Adams family show are among my fond memories.
The weird and wonderful family came to devilishly delightful life in The Addams Family. This magnificently macabre musical comedy was created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, Drama Desk Award winner Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys), and Olivier Award-winning original directors and designers Phelim McDermott & Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter) with direction by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks.
The show delighted and spooked the audience on Dec. 14 at the Morrison Center, Boise State University. McDermott and Crouch’s sets and costumes fostered both charm and tremendous humor. Morticia’s decolletage stops precisely short of key areas. Under the gloomy shine of the moon, The cast meanders from the fog-draped exterior of the family’s gothic pile to the prominent furnishings of gloomy interiors.
They are staunchly aided by Basil Twist’s unique and brilliantly creative puppets. Natasha Katz’s wonderfully weird lighting made the set one to remember. The whole show is a celebration of the ghastly, the ghostly and the side-splitting. And there was another special quality to this productoin. Unlike in most current musicals, the songs really shined: Melody, too, has risen from the dead.
The Addams Family featured an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
The Addams Family is a smash-hit musical comedy that brings the darkly delirious world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and, of course, Lurch to spooky and spectacular life. “A visually satisfying, rib-tickling, lunatic musical that will entertain you to death!”
