Stone Temple Pilots, the alternative rock band that ditched singer
Scott Weiland in February and replaced him with Linkin Park's Chester
Bennington, will release a five-song EP next month, USA Today Reports.
The band not only has a new singer. It has a new name, sort of. The record, High Rise, out Oct. 8, is being released under the moniker Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington, perhaps to avoid further inflaming Weiland according to Eric R Danton of Rolling Stone.
The band sued Weiland in May for using STP to promote his solo career. Weiland countersued for $7 million, demanding that the band be barred from using the STP name, Danton wrote. Bennington first performed with STP in May at the KROQ Weenie Roast in Los Angeles. The rest of Stone Temple Pilots fired singer Scott Weiland in February, followed by the band suing Weiland and the singer filing a countersuit.

Although Stone Temple Pilots haven't commented on the name change, it seems like a response to comments Weiland made earlier this summer questioning his former bandmates' decision to replace him. "I'm surprised they did what they did without checking the legality of it, how they just decided to go and use the name and go and hire another singer and start playing shows with a name that I still am an owner of," Weiland said.
In addition to the EP, which will come out on STP's Play Pen/ADA label, the band begins a tour
September 4th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. "For us the creative juices
have just been flowing – we've been writing, we have tons of great
ideas," Bennington told Rolling Stone in May.
