The
College of Idaho will host a special event on campus Oct. 8-10
celebrating the 20th anniversary of late director Robert Altman’s
award-winning film, Short Cuts. Local film producer Mike Kaplan, who was an associate producer on Short Cuts and later directed a documentary about it titled Luck, Trust & Ketchup: Robert Altman in Carver Country,
will be on campus for the three-day event, which will include
screenings of both films as well as Q & A sessions with Kaplan and
Tess Gallagher, the writer and widow of Raymond Carver, upon whose
writings Short Cuts is based.
Film screenings will take place at 7 p.m. each night in Langroise Recital Hall on the C of I campus in Caldwell, and each screening will be followed by a Q & A with Kaplan and Gallagher. Luck, Trust & Ketchup will show on Oct. 8 and 10, with Short Cuts showing Oct. 9. All three events are free and open to the entire C of I community and the public.
Short Cuts, Altman’s award-winning and Oscar-nominated mosaic of contemporary life, is adapted from Carver’s writings and features an all-star cast led by Robert Downey, Jr. , Julianne Moore, Jack Lemmon, Lily Tomlin, Tom Waits, Tim Robbins, Andie MacDowell, Frances McDormand, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Lyle Lovett. The panoramic comedy-drama will be bookended by screenings of the illuminating documentary Luck, Trust & Ketchup, which marked the first time Altman allowed full access to his filmmaking process. The entire Short Cuts cast appears in the documentary, along with Altman’s collaborators and Gallagher, Carver’s “voice” during the landmark film’s evolution.
