Idaho State's Demonte Horton is Poised to Rewrite the Record Books

by Michael Strickland

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State University football team  rewrote their record books Saturday in a historic 62-28 win over in-state rival Idaho, beating the Vandals for the first time since 1995, the Idaho State Journal reports.  A key underpinning of the explosive offense is Demonte Horton, a true freshman who is the second starter at wide receiver. Horton bolsters an already top heavy receiver core.

Against the Vandals, Quarterback Tanner Gueller set career and program records with 492 yards passing and eight touchdown tosses. Behind the Gueller-Horton magic combination, ISU rolled up 754 offensive yards and scored the most points against a Division I opponent since Holt Arena's opening game — a 64-34 win over UNLV on Sept. 26, 1970, according to the Journal.
The win puts Idaho State at 4-1 and 3-0 in Big Sky Conference play — good for a tie atop the league standings. The last time the Bengals started their conference slate 3-0, they won the 1-AA national title (1981).
He is a player to watch. The 6' 3" stalwart receiver from Skyview High School in Nampa is ready to reset the record books at his position in the entire conference. Take a look at this 80+ yard touchdown catch and run:
I predicted Horton's success in high school, writing 6 Reasons Why DeMonte Horton is One of the Best High School Wide Receivers in the Country:
DeMonte Horton, a 6-3, 205-pound wide receiver from Skyview High School in Nampa, ID, is one such athlete. His list of potential colleges includes Air Force, Army, Navy, Adams State and Idaho State. Horton puts tremendous pressure on opposing defenses, who virtually have to plan their entire games around him.
My article continued:
Horton is the prototype for success at the position. “A receiver must be able to avoid obstacles and move his body in space,” writes Jay Norvell in his book, Complete Wide Receiver. “To be able to adjust, a player must have a high level of agility.” Horton is the type of wide receiver who can change body position, even in midair, to make a critical play. His upper body flexibility allows his hands to always get into place and make the catch. He's a smooth, natural athlete who makes things look easy. Horton on the field is a beautiful and exciting thing to watch.
Now it is clear why there was so much excitement when Horton signed at ISU. Follow Bengal football this year and catch this rising star!
